Do you realize that on the mission field, female missionaries outnumber males two to one? And in some parts of the world, the gap widens to an astonishing 7:1 female-to-male ratio.
So, it was a pleasant surprise when Christ For the City-Costa Rica base welcomed 5 young men as short-term volunteers between the months of January and July 2012.
Not only that, but with the passing of the years, the older teen boys are stepping up into positions of leadership in many of the Christ For the City ministries in La Carpio–in the soccer programs, Sunday Bible classes, children’s club, tutoring classes, and Friday night youth group.
With so many children and teens in La Carpio growing up in fatherless households, and others under the heavy hand of an alcoholic, abusive father, I delight in watching the girls and boys let down their guard in spontaneous play, and the teens interacting with men after God’s own heart.
Currently, there are three full time male missionaries, and almost a dozen male volunteers from the community, giving back service to a God who rescued them from hell and transformed their lives entirely. This year, there have already been three all-male mission trips to a tiny rural village up north, bordering Nicaragua.
Join us in prayer for God to raise up more men to join us in ministry, that will take their testimony of faith in Jesus Christ to Costa Rica and even to all the nations!
The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is upon me,
for the Lord has anointed me
to bring good news to the poor.
He has sent me to comfort the brokenhearted
and to proclaim that captives will be released
and prisoners will be freed.
He has sent me to tell those who mourn
that the time of the Lord’s favor has come,
and with it, the day of God’s anger against their enemies.
To all who mourn in Israel,
he will give a crown of beauty for ashes,
a joyous blessing instead of mourning,
festive praise instead of despair. (Isaiah 61:1-3)
