Let the waters rise… February 6, 2013

Yesterday….I heard of complications with volunteers….that a friend lost his job without notice, effective immediately….that another friend’s marriage is devastatingly broken. That’s just the new information.

I was already feeling overwhelmed…How will I start today?  Does the Bible have anything to say about approaching these–and rougher–moments?

Psalm 92: 1-2 says  “It is good to give thanks to the Lord, to sing praises to the Most High.  It is good to proclaim  your unfailing love in the morning, your faithfulness in the evening…”

#1. Switch into thankful gear. Hmmm.

Psalm 93:2-5 says “Your throne, O Lord, has stood from time immemorial.  You yourself are from the everlasting past.  The floods have risen up, O Lord. The floods have roared like thunder; the floods have lifted their pounding waves.  But mightier than the breakers on the shore–the Lord above is mightier than these!  Your royal laws cannot be changed.  Your reign, O Lord, is holy forever and ever.”

#2.  Step back, remember that God is God and I am not.

…the waters are going to keep rising, spouses are going to sin, companies will fire workers unjustly, my 16 year old girls will still end up pregnant, families I know will have nothing to eat…

…and God absolutely still in control, absolutely still King of the Universe.  He is holy and perfect forever, and intent on perfecting me as well, through all  my sorrows, joys and doubts…watching to see how thankful I am and how I continue to obey his instructions…

Remain in Me, and I will remain in you.  Apart from me you can do nothing.  ~JESUS.

Today I choose Jesus instead of nothing.
